Dr Cynthia Hickman, Ph.D., RN., MSN/Ed, BSN


Bio

Cynthia Jean Hickman received her Ph.D. in Health Services with a specialization in leadership from Walden University. Her research focus is nutritional health with a focus on nutritional food label education. She is the 2019 Walden University Social Change Fellow and grant recipient which is allowing ongoing research around nutritional health in rural populations focusing on older adults. Also an 1st time author: From the Lens Of Daughter, Nurse & Caregiver, a book written after caring for my mother.

Dr. Hickman obtained her Master’s in Nursing with a specialization in nursing education from Walden University, her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Prairie View A & M University and received a diploma in nursing from Toledo Hospital School of Nursing, Toledo, Ohio. She has over 26 years of cardiovascular nursing experience in an acute-care setting and during her tenure served as a unit-based case manager for congestive heart failure populations.  She retired in 2013 to pursue a career in academia.

Dr. Hickman has written and contributed to academic and non-academic journals. She recently published a book; From The Lens of Daughter, Nurse, and Caregiver: A Daughter's Journey of Duty and Honor. It tells the story on her 20-year journey of caring for her mother and offers tips and guidance for those who may find themselves in a role of caregiving; both personally and professionally.

Elected to Chair the Leadership Succession Committee of Beta-Beta Houston and feel so honored to serve. My goal is to encourage our students and colleagues to become active members and eventually leaders in the field of nursing and  STTI Beta-Beta Houston's professional organization.

Dr. Hickman is currently as part-time faculty at Capella University, teaching in the RN/BSN FlexPath program. Courses taught are Organizational and Systems Management for Quality Outcomes and Global Perspectives of Community Health and Public Health Services.

She is involved in many community organization like revitalization of the community infrastructure. She is a 2019 graduate from the Missouri City Police and Fire Citizen Academy and very active in her community's quarterly Coffee with a Cop in Missouri City, Texas; a program geared toward learning and forming relationship with those who protect and serve us.

Particularly interested in student success encouraging the next generation of nursing students to excel in scholarship and service; not only in the acute-care setting but the community as well. Mentoring is essential in the nursing profession. She is a member of National Black Nurses Association, Fort Bend County Black Nurses Association, Association of Black Nursing Faculty, and National Society of Leadership and Success.

Dr. Hickman served as STTI chapter Beta-Beta Houston as the Leadership Succession Chair. Term end 2021.
  Currently serves on the Sigma, North America Region-6 Global  Service Committee.
